21 Thoughts For 21 Years

Today is the day that I turn twenty-one years old... I'm not sure whether to be happy or sad?! They say that once you turn 21, your life is just on fast-forward and next thing you know, you're thirty.

I don't really mind, to be honest! Getting older kind of excites me but it is scary to think how fast it'll all be coming. I always look forward to birthdays. Not just mine.. I look forward to all my friends and family's birthdays - probably more than they do themselves! There's something about celebrating someones existence that just feels.... fun? I don't know I just like them okay.

Anyway, birthdays are a chance to reflect on what you've accomplished in the past years, what you've learnt so far and what you'd like to achieve by your next birthday. I've been making some notes and lists - I know, such a Fatima thing to do - that remind me of these things.

There were a few highlights and bits that got me thinking, so I wanted to share 21 thoughts for 21 years!

1. I don't look 21. Or 20. Or 19. I still get IDed at the cinema! I got told I look 13 last week. THIRTEEN?! I guess it'll come in handy when I'm older but 13 is a bit ridiculous!

2. If you want something the only way you can get it is by doing it yourself. I've learnt this the hard way. Don't rely on other people because if you want it, you're the only person who should go out and get it.

3. Life is too short. Make everyday count. Go on adventures. Make memories. Life your life to the fullest!

4. Do what you love and love what do is a quote I live by. I apply this to several aspects of my life. career and education being the most relevant at this stage.

5. No rain, no flowers is a quote I should remember more often. With hardships comes ease. There will be something good that comes out of the bad. Yada yada yada... all that kinda stuff.

6. Stop comparing yourself to others. Comparison is the thief of joy, as they say.

7. Friends aren't forever and that's okay. It's important to leave those who bring you down. But it's also important to show appreciation to those who deserve it.

8. Fake it till you make it. I'm going to admit that I do this. Basically, an example would be... if I was meeting new people I would overcome my nerves by thinking 'these people don't know me, I can be anyone I want' and suddenly... there's a confident Fatima on the loose.

9. It's okay to eat cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner (I am notoriously known to do this regularly, I have no regrets). I sometimes do this with noodles too - I am the noodle queen, what can I say?

10. Take as many opportunities as you can! I should really embrace what ever I am given in any situation. You never know how you'll do in a situation until you try... so just do it.

11. Time real does heal everything... remember that!

12. Travelling brings me joy, no matter how close or far. I love going on little city breaks in England or abroad. I should try and go on these more often.

13. You can't please everyone, no matter how hard you try. Not everyone will want to be your friend. Not everyone will like you. And that is okay.

14. What goes around comes around. It doesn't hurt to be nice.

15. Waking up early makes your whole day 10x better. I am such a morning person and I much prefer getting up early, being productive and having an early night (I am such a grandma, ha).

16. Appreciate the little things in life more. Be more grateful towards what you have. Some people have far less.

17. Don't be afraid to show emotion - I'm known to bottle things in quite a lot. Just let loose a little...

18. If you are having a bad day, ice cream and a good movie makes everything better in life!

19. Don't care about what other people think... you do you boo. *insert sassy girl emoji here*

20. Beauty comes from within. Don't dwell on what's on the outside, focus on the inner beauty. Whether that is directed towards someone else or yourself.

21. Experiences and memories are worth waaaaay more than materialistic things. Obvious, but true. Bare this in mind!
