How To Start Your Career In The Social Media Industry

I've been working in the social media industry for over 3 years now and honestly, it feels like a lifetime. Social media marketing is constantly changing due to new platforms, updates and trends. It's a great industry if you like being kept on your toes and don't mind change, which is definitely how I feel about my job. If you are looking for ways on how you can start your career in the social media industry, I thought I'd share a post on how I got to where I am today and what steps you can take if you want to follow a similar career path.



Your Degree Choice

I studied Journalism and Media & Communications during my undergrad and within that we touched on PR and social media. I don't think it is necessary to have a social media related degree to get a job in the industry, but it is definitely advantageous. My degree taught me many things, some of which were not useful and some things that are useful and I use in my job today. So I definitely think my degree helped my understanding and knowledge of social media marketing.

However, if you have graduated in a different degree such as English or Business, your degree is still of use. Social media is down to communication and creativity so those degrees would definitely support those key traits needed. 

Work Experience

I hate to be the one to say you need work experience but it definitely helps! I know that it is hard to get the opportunity sometimes but if you really push, I'm sure you can secure a placement for a week or two. During my studies at university, I did several work experiences at different digital marketing agencies, working in PR, social media and even content. I think this experience showcased determination, true interest and passion, which helped me secure my first job (before graduation) within the social media industry. 



Research And Keeping On Top Of Trends

If you have an interview or are looking to apply for a job, it is key to keep on top of the latest social media news and trends. The industry is constantly changing and you are very likely going to get asked questions about certain platforms. If you manage to share some knowledge about a hot topic or recent news, you'll definitely stand out against other applicants. 

Start A Twitter Account

If you really want to demonstrate passion for social media, why not set up a social media account dedicated to you discussing and sharing posts about the industry? Twitter is a fantastic platform for this and if you include your Twitter @handle in your CV or application, it will make you appear confident and attentive. 

Get Your Creative Juices Flowing

As mentioned before, social media is about being creative so if you are lacking inspiration or ideas, you need to find quick ways to get back on the ball. Social media never sleeps so you have to be creative 24/7 if you want to draft great posts for your company or clients. Personally, I like keeping track of the latest campaigns so I can see how I can apply them to my clients, as well as researching what competitors are doing. It's an easy fix and definitely helps with creative thinking.
