How To Follow The Curly Girl Method

Over the past few months I've seen lots of influencers and people talking about the Curly Girl Method. I was intrigued but just assumed it was one of those internet crazes that come and go. I've been having quite a mare with my hair so I thought what have I go to lose? And gave in. After attempt no 1, it actually worked. The method worked!

Before I discovered the curly girl method most mornings consisted of me having a battle with my hair and then me deciding to shove it up into a bun or braid it. The battle of me vs hair lasted way too long and thankfully the curly girl method has provided some breaks and a solution in between the really tough times.

Anyway, if you are new to this whole thing or fancy knowing more, here is the low down on how I've been practicing the curly girl method...

What is the Curly Girl Method?

The curly girl method is basically for those people who have naturally curly hair but over years of damage from heat styling tools and hair products with sulphates in them, the natural curl pattern has decreased. To bring back the natural curl pattern, you must strip your hair from the sulphates & silicones and go back to a natural approach.

Step-by-Step

STEP 1: Wash your hair with sulphate free shampoo and conditioner and only use sulphates every couple months to clarify your hair.

STEP 2: After showering, dry your hair with a t-shirt or a towel with a similar texture - not a normal hand towel.

STEP 3: I still like to brush my hair because my hair tends to spring back up anyway and it'd be a knotty mess if I didn't, but it is recommended to avoid brushing your hair.

STEP 4: Apply a gel or curl creme to your hair and scrunch / twirl your hair if you want to emphasise the curls.

STEP 5: Let your hair air dry.

Tips

  • Lots of other influencers I've watched also recommend leaving your hair longer between hair washes, however I can't go more than 3 days without washing my hair! It's up to you and if it works for your hair type.
  • Have patience. With years of damage comes years of reconciling. Some people's results may be faster than others.
  • I actually used the old school blue gel to test out the method for the first couple of weeks and it worked really well! Once I was convinced it was working, I bought the real products (coming next)
  • Apparently co-washing works well too, but I have yet to explore that!
