Working The 9-5: How To Have A Work-Life Balance

Let’s be real, working a full-time job is hard work! We all like to have a life outside of the office and keep on top of other commitments like kids, a home or another business. Personally for me, I like to make time for the important things like family, friends, blogging and a few other hobbies. I find that it becomes really difficult to keep on top of everything, it’s always a couple of the things that remain on top whilst the other factors are slacking. Find yourself in the same situation? Here are some tips to help you have a better work life balance.

Work is work and home is home
I must admit this one is pretty hard for me, especially because my job is such a huge part of my life, but you have just got to leave work at the office and come home without the weight on your shoulders. It’s easy to bring work stress home but if you manage to overcome this, you will instantly have a much better work-life balance.

Work from home? Have a dedicated work space
For you freelancers or remote workers it must be hard to switch off since your home is your office. I would recommend getting out and about and keep a cafĂ© or library as your work space. If that is not ideal for you, dedicate a room or area in your home to working. That way you can move away from it feeling like you have ‘left work’ at the end of the day. I love working on the dining table at home because it is away from my main living space and once I clock off, it’s easy for me to go into the lounge and relax.

Just say ‘no’
It’s really easy to feel the pressure at work and say yes to several tasks. Be realistic with your workload and if you have been asked to take on a job but feel like you would have to work extra hours to get it done, just say no. It’s okay to say no in the workplace – as long as you get your other bits done! Which brings me on to my next point…

Prioritise tasks
Feeling overwhelmed with the amount of things on your to-do list? Just prioritise your workload. Get the important jobs done first so you feel less pressure. Then crack on with the lesser important tasks once the others are complete. That way you won't feel the need to work overtime or at home to get tasks done.

Switch off your work devices
If you work from a company laptop or mobile, switch it off as soon as you have finished the day. This way you aren’t tempted to log in to check an email or hear back from that report. It can wait till you are logged in the next working day.
